'SEA Games' training should be centralized'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): All sports organizations preparing for the
\nforthcoming SEA Games should centralize their training sessions,
\nan official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Djoko Pramono, Indonesia's SEA Games training director, said
\ncentralized training was designed to improve the organizations'
\ncontrol of their training programs.<\/p>\n
\"If an athlete wants to conduct training in his or her
\nhometown, there must be somebody responsible to supervise it.
\nObserving the present situation, I believe centralized training
\nis the most appropriate approach to preparing for the Games,\"
\nDjoko said.<\/p>\n
Djoko was of the opinion that centralization was more
\neffective than the decentralization forwarded by Wismoyo
\nArismunandar, chairman of the Indonesian Sports Council.<\/p>\n
According to Wismoyo, decentralized training was designed to
\nensure that athletes selected for training were fit enough.<\/p>\n
But the Indonesian Archery Association sent a letter to the
\ncouncil saying that many sports organizations preferred to
\ncentralize their training.<\/p>\n
Organizations conducting centralized training include rowing,
\nvolleyball, powerlifting and judo.<\/p>\n
\"If the council still wants to decentralize training, it is
\ndifficult to develop quality athletes,\" the archery association
\nsaid in a letter dated Oct. 29 last year.<\/p>\n
Djoko, however, said the council's remarks that training
\nshould be decentralized should not be treated as a policy cast in
\nstone. \"It was only an idea and not a policy. This is only a
\nstart how to treat training in a more professional way.\"<\/p>\n
Observing the response by most sports organizations to
\ndecentralized training, the council eventually agreed to have
\ncentralized training.<\/p>\n
The other objective of centralizing training is to forge
\ncloser cooperation between the council's central and regional
\noffices.<\/p>\n
Soccer<\/p>\n
Djoko further said yesterday that 22 soccer players are
\nstarting a centralized training program here today.<\/p>\n
The national team plans to take part in three major events:
\nthe Malaysian Dunhill League from Feb. 20 to March 3, World Cup
\nqualifying matches in April and June and the SEA Games from Oct.
\n11 to Oct. 19.<\/p>\n
\"Athletes must focus their attention on the SEA Games since it
\nis a very important event,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"There will also be friendlies between the three events,\" he
\nadded without saying which countries would be picked.<\/p>\n
The national squad comprises members of the last year's Asia
\nCup Championship team. Only two players are not available for the
\nprogram.<\/p>\n
Goalkeeper Kurnia Sandy is under contract with the Italian
\nteam Sampdoria and Yeyen Tumena is nursing an injury.<\/p>\n
None of the squad members undergoing centralized training are
\nallowed to play for their clubs in the ongoing Kansas league.<\/p>\n
\"But they are allowed to play in the final four matches. I
\nurge them to consider the country's interest above that of their
\nclubs,\" said the director. He said he had spoken to club owners
\nasking for special treatment for national squad members.<\/p>\n
Shooting<\/p>\n
National shooting coach Glenn Clifton Apfel said yesterday
\nthat the Indonesian Shooting and Hunting Association will start a
\ncentralized training program in July.<\/p>\n
\"We're going to have four training camps because many athletes
\ncannot join the program if it means them leaving their jobs,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The association is to stage the first camp this month. The
\nsecond will take place in March, the third is in May and the
\nfinal one in July before the centralized program begins.<\/p>\n
Each athlete will only take part in the centralized training
\ncamp for a week after a six-week decentralized program.<\/p>\n
\"By staging training camps, the association can reduce the
\nbudget but the result will be better than a centralized program,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
\"Based on my experience as an athlete, centralized training
\nprograms affect athletes' performances because they become very
\nweary,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The association plans to send its athletes to China one month
\nbefore the SEA Games' opening ceremony.<\/p>\n
Four Chinese coaches and three local assistants are grooming
\n49 marksmen and women. The squad will be reduced to 42 after the
\nBahari Cup championship in March.<\/p>\n
The main squad will only consist of 37, to be picked in July.<\/p>\n
The association is focusing on men's running target, men's mix
\nrun running target, women's running target, women's mix run
