SEA Games training program joined by 884 athletes<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A total of 884 athletes have joined the national
\ntraining program as preparation for the 19th SEA Games here in
\nOctober, the Games' training chief Togi Hutagaol said Thursday.<\/p>\n
Twenty-two foreign and 143 local coaches have also joined the
\ntraining, which began in November.<\/p>\n
The National Sports Council expects 240 more athletes and 49
\ncoaches to arrive for training in the first week of March.<\/p>\n
But Togi said the council is facing accommodation problems due
\nto their arrival.<\/p>\n
\"The Century Park Athlete Hotel could not accommodate them
\nall. We're still thinking of booking another hotel or renting
\nhouses around the Senayan sports complex,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The number of athletes do not include rowers, who practice and
\nstay at the Jatiluhur dam, weightlifters who practice in Lampung,
\nand spikers who practice at their dormitory in Sentul, Bogor,
\nWest Java.<\/p>\n
Five sports organizations have sent their athletes for
\noverseas stints. The Indonesian Track and Field Association has
\nsent six athletes to Houston, USA and Australia, and the
\nIndonesian Golf Association has sent its athletes to Australia.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Swimming Association has sent its swimmers to
\nAustralia, Singapore and the USA, the Indonesian Table Tennis
\nAssociation has sent its athletes to China and the Indonesian
\nWaterskiing Association has sent its athletes to the USA.<\/p>\n
The council hoped that starting from March, it will not face
\nany problems with athletes' permission from their schools or
\noffices.<\/p>\n
\"The council has sent letters to the minister of education and
\nculture, the minister of manpower, the Armed Forces chief and
\ngovernors of 27 provinces to help athletes' permission,\" Togi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Togi said national female basketballers are expected to arrive
\nthis week to start their training with coach Huang Chang Yu of
\nChina.<\/p>\n
The women's soccer team and the men's water polo squad are
\nexpected to begin training early next month. (yan)<\/p>",
