SEA Games doping test rooms not ready<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): With only 11 days left before the 19th SEA Games
\nbegin, the doping commission is still having problems organizing
\ndoping rooms at Senayan sports complex.<\/p>\n
The commission's chairwoman, Dr. Dangsina Moeloek, said
\nyesterday that most sports organizers still did not understand
\nhow to prepare the three rooms needed at each venue by the doping
\ncommission.<\/p>\n
"They usually only build toilets. But we also need a waiting
\nroom, equipped with an air conditioner, and a working room for my
\nstaff," she said.<\/p>\n
At the Senayan complex, only the Madya Stadium -- the track
\nand field venue -- and the indoor tennis stadium -- the
\nweightlifting and bodybuilding venue -- meet international
\nstandards.<\/p>\n
The main stadium, where the soccer will start on Oct. 5, does
\nnot yet have drug testing rooms. The swimming events organizers
\npromised to finish their doping test rooms on Oct. 2, while the
\nsquash organizers built their required rooms as they build the
\ncourts.<\/p>\n
"Other venues (at Senayan) still need to prepare rooms,"
\nDangsina said.<\/p>\n
The other venues in the city have met the standard.<\/p>\n
Some Games participating countries arranged for their athletes
\nto have out-of-competition tests to increase the athletes'
\nunderstanding of what the tests involve and which substances
\ncould result in a positive test.<\/p>\n
Dangsina said she had received a fax from Prof. Yang Zeyi,
\ndirector of the China Doping Control Center, saying: ".. not only
\na few Southeast Asian countries do out-of-competition tests and
\nwe found positive results of analysis."<\/p>\n
"We also did such tests about two months ago. It's also a
\nshort course for them to understand what a doping test really is
\nsince many of our athletes do not understand the tests," she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"It's also a good chance for my staff to practice their
\nknowledge of taking urine samples and doing the tests," she
\nadded.<\/p>\n
She urged the organizing committee to speed up the preparation
\nof the doping test rooms, and to isolate them from the public.<\/p>\n
"If the rooms are not isolated enough, we may have claims from
\nthe athletes. They may say that their samples were switched by
\nothers. We must avoid such incidents," she said.<\/p>\n
The commission will take urine samples from world record
\nbreakers, first to fourth place winners, and other athletes at
\nrandom.<\/p>\n
The samples will be sent to Indonesia's doping laboratory in
\nRawasari, East Jakarta, which has received accreditation from the
\nSydney doping laboratory.<\/p>\n
Separately, national training director Djoko Pramono said that
\nsome athletes, who had been injured and hospitalized, were
\nexpected to recover before the Games begin.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's best hope in beach volleyball, Timmy Yudani, who
\npartners with Bertha Kaize, is in hospital with typhoid.<\/p>\n
Indoor volleyball spiker Fortina also has typhoid.<\/p>\n
"I believe the volleyball manager will be able to handle the
\nproblems. He can replace sick athletes with substitutes," Djoko
