        "content": "<p>Scroll of Honor for Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>We refer to the article Activists slam habitat award for <br>\nJakarta, published in The Jakarta Post on Oct. 4.<\/p>\n<p>The city of Jakarta is a megacity with more than 10 million <br>\ninhabitants. About 20 percent, or two million, are living in <br>\nkampongs or slums. It is clear that many challenges remain ahead, <br>\nbut the city has made significant improvements.<\/p>\n<p>UN-HABITAT recognizes the progress that has been made so far <br>\nand is helping to address the areas that need to be improved, <br>\nsuch as strengthening the people's process, through our <br>\ncollaboration with the central government, provincial governments <br>\nand civil society organizations in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>As you may be aware, UN-HABITAT currently has projects of some <br>\nUS$25 million under the post-tsunami reconstruction, targeting <br>\nthe most vulnerable households. Further, on World Habitat Day on <br>\nOct. 3, we signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry <br>\nof Public Works, the Ministry of the People's Housing and the <br>\nAssociation of Provincial Governments to provide a framework for <br>\nintroducing the Slum Upgrading Facility in Indonesia. This <br>\nfacility is aimed at mobilizing capital to provide affordable <br>\nhousing and better infrastructure for the urban poor.<\/p>\n<p>It is in this context that UN-HABITAT awarded the municipality <br>\nof Jakarta the Scroll of Honor to recognize the progress that has <br>\nbeen made and to lay the foundation for further improvements in <br>\nbuilding an inclusive city.<\/p>\n<p>JANE NYAKAIRU<br>\nChief, Information Services Section<br>\nOffice of the Executive Director, UN-HABITAT <br>\nNairobi<\/p>",
