        "content": "<p>'Scrapping subsidy would hurts poor'<\/p>\n<p>The steady increase in fuel prices has prompted some experts to<br>\ncall for the scrapping of the fuel subsidy. The Jakarta Post<br>\ninterviewed a number of residents to obtain their views on the<br>\ndebate over the merits of the subsidy.<\/p>\n<p>Suherman, 28, is an entrepreneur:<\/p>\n<p>The government should maintain the fuel subsidy because many<br>\npeople, low-income families in particular, have suffered greatly<br>\nsince the government slashed the subsidy last March.<\/p>\n<p>They claimed that cutting the subsidy would enable the<br>\ngovernment to provide free primary education and health care for<br>\nthe poor, but I don't see any evidence of compensation.<\/p>\n<p>If I were in charge of drafting policies on fuel, I would<br>\nchoose to subsidize fuel rather than provide obscure free health<br>\nand education services. Subsidizing fuel is a more realistic<br>\noption that has an immediate effect on people's lives.<\/p>\n<p>Providing free health care and education is not an easy job<br>\nsince we have no clear system that supports the implementation of<br>\nsuch noble policies.<\/p>\n<p>Didiet, 35, is an accountant who works on Jl. Sudirman. He<br>\nlives in Tebet, South Jakarta:<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think it wouldn't be wise to stop subsidizing<br>\nfuel as this could jeopardize social stability.<\/p>\n<p>If fuel prices are raised, the prices of basic commodities<br>\nwill automatically rise and if that happens, the government has<br>\nno choice but to increase the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>I think the problem is rooted in the government's income<br>\ndeficit, that it can no longer meet the people's needs.<\/p>\n<p>But, I think there are many ways to solve this problem.<br>\nThe government can increase taxes, especially industrial taxes,<br>\nso that it gains profit from the rich and can put this extra<br>\nmoney into subsidizing daily needs, such as diesel, kerosene and<br>\nbasic commodities.<\/p>\n<p>-- The Jakarta Post<\/p>",
