Scientists, cultural critics awarded with 'Satya Lencana'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Eight scientists and cultural critics were
\nhonored on Wednesday for their outstanding contributions to
\neducation and culture.<\/p>\n
Minister of National Education Yahya Muhaimin presented the
\nSatya Lencana Pembangunan, Satya Lencana Wirakarya, Satya Lencana
\nKebudayaan and Satya Lencana Hadiah Seni awards on behalf of
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n
\"This year is quite special since it happens that all of those
\nreceiving the Satya Lencana Pembangunan award are from the
\nBandung Institute of Technology (ITB),\" Yahya said in his
\naddress.<\/p>\n
\"We hope their commitment will help improve the teaching of
\nmathematics and science,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The ITB lecturers -- Djoko Susanto, I Gde Widiadnyana Merati,
\nRizal Zainuddin Tamin and Isnuwardi Anto -- received the Satya
\nLencana Pembangunan award for their achievement in developing a
\ndecentralized system of higher education, lecture system,
\nphysical and information development and scholarship system.<\/p>\n
The 76-year-old Ali Akbar Navis, a long-time cultural critic,
\nreceived the Satya Lencana Kebudayaan award.<\/p>\n
Navis, known for his critical novels and poetry, said he felt
\nhonored by the award.<\/p>\n
\"But actually ... it's too late for me to receive such an
\naward. Many younger cultural critics received this award before
\nme. Then again, I'm always late in everything,\" he remarked.<\/p>\n
Navis stopped writing in the 1950s to protest what he believed
\nwas a lack of criticism in the writing of the time. He resumed
\nwriting in 1994.<\/p>\n
\"I was married at the age of 32 and I started writing short
\nstories at that time, while others began at a younger age. All of
\nmy fellow cultural critics used to laugh at me.<\/p>\n
\"By the way, the Indonesian award gives very little money
\ncompared to the international one. Gosh, I'm craving money,\"
\nNavis said.<\/p>\n
The Satya Lencana Wira Karya award was posthumously awarded to
\nthe late Mrs. Hasnah Anwar Boestam for her work in educating
\nkindergarten students in riot-torn Aceh. Hasnah died last year.<\/p>\n
The Satya Lencana Hadiah Seni award was given to Teuku Johan
\nand Abdullah Arif.<\/p>\n
Minister Yahya expressed hope the awards would spur the
\nrecipients to build on their work.<\/p>\n
\"These awards are not just symbolic. We have to appreciate and
\nmotivate these people to help this country out of its crisis.\"
