Science competition organized to search for Nobel material<\/p>\n

Indonesia is organizing an international science competition
\ncalled the \"First Step to Nobel Prize in Chemistry\" in the hopes
\nof helping young local scientists to achieve a Nobel in the
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
The competition, organized by senior Indonesian scientists
\ngrouped in the Banten-based Center for The First Step to Nobel
\nPrize in Chemistry, will collect a total of 50 research papers on
\nchemistry from around the globe, which will be graded by a team
\nof international chemistry professors.<\/p>\n
\"At present Nigeria, Thailand and Taiwan have expressed their
\nintention to participate,\" said chairman of the organizing
\ncommittee Sudarko on Thursday, adding that the deadline to submit
\nthe papers for the competition was Dec. 31.<\/p>\n
He said that a team of 11 students selected from schools
\nacross the country was being trained in Jember, Magelang, Malang,
\nSalatiga and Yogyakarta to compete with foreign participants.<\/p>\n
He added that the winners would be announced in March of 2006.<\/p>\n
The competition initiator, Yohanes Surya, said that the event,
\nwould be a perfect forum to groom the country's potential
\nstudents as future Nobel laureates in science.<\/p>\n
\"Many Indonesian young scientists won several science
\nOlympiads in recent years, so it is time for us to prepare future
\nNoble prize winners,\" he said at a media gathering to promote the
\ncompetition.<\/p>\n
According to Yohanes, the nation's young students had always
\nwon similar competitions called the First Step to Nobel Prize in
\nPhysics since 1999.<\/p>\n
He said to get a Nobel prize, Indonesian students would first
\nhave to get international acknowledgements to attract the world's
\nattention.<\/p>\n
\"In order to be a Nobel laureate, one must be educated by a
\nNobel laureate. The only way to make them willing to educate the
\ncountry's bright students, is by winning international
\ncompetitions, so that the Nobel-winning scientists would
\nrecognize their potential,\" said Yohanes, a professor of science
\nand president of the Indonesian Physics Olympiad team.<\/p>\n
Winner of the 14th First Step to Nobel Prize in Physics in
\nPoland, Anike Bowaire, said she hoped that such a competition
\ncould show how talented the nation's students were.<\/p>\n
\"When I was in Poland, other students kept asking me about
\nIndonesia and terrorism. Through this event, we can show that we
\nalso have brights students aside from the bomb makers,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Professor of Chemistry at Bandung Institute of Technology Euis
\nHolisotan Hakim stressed that the most important thing about the
\ncompetition, was to give a chance for students to develop a
\nliking for chemistry and science as a whole.<\/p>\n
\"When they love what they're studying, they will someday apply
\ntheir knowledge to develop their beloved country,\" she said.<\/p>",
