School superintendents reject pay<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: At least 116 superintendents of junior and
\nsenior high schools in North Sumatra have refused their monthly
\nsalaries to protest a decision to cut their allowances starting
\nthis month.<\/p>\n
The school supervisors, employed by the province's education
\noffice, lodged on Monday a complaint to the local legislative
\ncouncil in the North Sumatra capital of Medan.<\/p>\n
The protesters were not able to meet North Sumatra Governor T.
\nRizal Nurdin earlier in the day to voice their grievances.<\/p>\n
F.J. Pinem, who chairs the provincial branch of the Indonesian
\nSchool Supervisors' Association, said the payment of allowances
\nwas unilaterally discontinued by the government without any clear
\nreasons.<\/p>\n
"The allowances have been suspended until we can submit proof
\nof their appointment in the form of certificates issued by the
\nprovincial education office," he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said the requirement was peculiar as the supervisors had
\noccupied the post for decades.<\/p>\n
In response, local councillor Erwan Parlinda told the
\nsuperintendents that the legislature would soon question the
\ngovernor about the reason behind the move to suspend the
