In response to the report in Warta Kota (June 28) entitled
\nFree elementary schools, humbug, as a school committee executive
\nI would like to clarify that besides the aid for state elementary
\nand junior high schools to mitigate the effects of the fuel
\nsubsidy reduction, a block grant is also provided in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The grant, based on Jakarta's basic education provisions,
\nconsists of Rp 1.5 million per month for elementary school
\noperations and Rp 20,000 per student, per month for educational
\nexpenses, and junior high school allocations are Rp 2.5 million
\nand Rp 27,500 respectively.<\/p>\n
In addition, elementary schools also receive Rp 12 million
\nannual aid and junior high schools Rp 35.2 million annual aid per
\nunit from the grant for the purchase of compulsory books.<\/p>\n
With the block grant and the fuel subsidy fund in Jakarta, for
\n2005\/2006 state elementary schools get a total of Rp
\n39,625\/student\/month and state junior high schools
\nRp 54,500\/student\/month.<\/p>\n
Therefore, all school committees in Jakarta are expected to
\nexercise supervision and control over the implementation of this
\npolicy on aid funds for school education, so as to guarantee
\ntransparency and accountability.<\/p>\n
