        "content": "<p>Scholarships for ASEAN students<\/p>\n<p>HANOI (JP): Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong announced<br>\nhere on Tuesday that he would provide new scholarships to help<br>\nundergraduate students from ASEAN countries study on the island<br>\nstate.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Singapore Cooperation Program Undergraduate<br>\nScholarship for ASEAN, the Singaporean government will set aside<br>\nS$12 million to provide about 30 undergraduate scholarships per<br>\nyear for ASEAN students over the next three to four years for<br>\nstudy in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarships will be for entry into non-medicine\/dentistry<br>\nundergraduate courses in National University and Nanyang<br>\nTechnological University. Each award, tenable for four years,<br>\ncovers tuition fees, airfare and an annual living allowance of<br>\n$3,500.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is aimed at alleviating the problem of bright<br>\nyoung ASEAN nationals who may not have the resources for higher<br>\neducation.<\/p>\n<p>\"I am very disturbed by the thought that because of the<br>\neconomic crisis many ASEAN members will lose a few valuable years<br>\nin educating their children,\" said Goh who is here to attend the<br>\nsixth ASEAN Summit.
