Schmidt to address batik conference<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt is
\nscheduled to address a batik conference and exhibition held here
\non Nov. 2 to Nov. 6, organizers say.<\/p>\n
Muljarto Tjokrowinoto from the International Conference on
\nCultural Tourism (ICCT) said over the weekend that Schmidt's
\nspeech will focus on the importance of cultural identity in
\nglobalization.<\/p>\n
Vice President Try Sutrisno will officially inaugurate the
\n\"Dunia Batik\" conference next Monday at Gadjah Mada University's
\nGraha Sabha Pramana Conference Hall. Minister of Tourism, Post
\nand Telecommunication Joop Ave and Minister of Education and
\nCulture Wardiman Djojonegoro are expected to attend.<\/p>\n
Participants are expected to number over 300, with 100 of them
\nforeigners from 11 countries.<\/p>\n
The exhibition will be divided into three main categories:
\nancient batik, today's batik and contemporary batik.<\/p>\n
The ancient batik exhibition will present no less than 150
\nancient batiks, made between 1850 and 1950, from all over the
\nworld. Among the exhibition's participants are the national
\ntextile museum, Danar Hadi batik gallery, Ardiyanto batik gallery
\nand Italian Sergio Feld Bauer.<\/p>\n
About 33 booths will exhibit today's batiks representing a
\nnumber of batik designers, the Indonesian Batik Foundation, and
\nthe Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers.<\/p>\n
The contemporary batik exhibition is for those who use batik
\ntechnique as a reference for their art. About 35 participants --
\nincluding Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, the UK and USA
\n-- will display their works here. Among Indonesian participants
