SBY pleads for more time for graft busting<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked for time on Tuesday to
\nwipe out corruption and bring about change in the country.<\/p>\n
Addressing participants of the Industrial Estate Management
\nCongress here on Tuesday, Susilo said his administration received
\na direct mandate from the people through a democratic election.<\/p>\n
\"My administration needs time to work and really bring change
\nto the country, and for the first time we have a government that
\nreceived a mandate directly from the people,\" Susilo said.<\/p>\n
Susilo, who was elected in the country's first ever direct
\npresidential election, has promised to introduce tough measures
\nagainst corruption and collusion.<\/p>\n
The Berlin-based Transparency International consistently lists
\nIndonesia among the world's most corrupt countries. Some
\nmultinational companies have reportedly relocated their
\noperations out of the country due to corruption.<\/p>\n
While Susilo has vowed to lead the country's anticorruption
\ndrive personally, people are still waiting to see big-time
\ncorruptors put behind bars.<\/p>\n
Nangroe Aceh Darussalam Governor Abdullah Puteh has been
\ndetained for an alleged markup in the purchase of a Russian-made
\nhelicopter by the Aceh administration in 2001, but skeptics still
\ndoubt he will see any jail time.<\/p>\n
\"I am very much aware that many people say that I have done
\nnothing more than make statements. Please, give me more time to
\nfulfill my promises to the country,\" Susilo said.<\/p>\n
The President, who took the oath of office on Oct. 20, has
\nover the past several weeks repeatedly said he is aware that many
\npeople doubt his administration will be able to live up to
\nambitious promises it made for its first 100 days in power.<\/p>\n
\"Everything will run well if we have a stable and sustainable
\ngovernment, which we already have since the peaceful and
\ndemocratic election. That is why my administration deserves
\nsupport from the people,\" the President said.<\/p>\n
Analysts have said there is nothing new in the President's
\neconomic, political and legal programs.<\/p>\n
They also say Susilo has not presented a clear plan of action
\nto usher in the changes he promised during the election campaign.<\/p>\n
Susilo said political stability was essential for his
\nadministration to develop the country.<\/p>\n
He further said there were two things that brought the county
\ndown to its current condition: government mismanagement and
\nrampant corruption.<\/p>\n
\"I ask industrialists to support me in fighting corruption. We
\nhave to improve the investment climate in the country,\" Susilo
\nsaid.<\/p>",
