'SBY has made no great achievements'<\/p>\n
After winning the country's first direct presidential election,
\nPresident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono took his oath of office last
\nOct. 20. How do people perceive his leadership over the past
\nyear? The Jakarta Post interviewed some residents here.<\/p>\n
Uchok Khadafi, 30, is an activist of a non-governmental
\norganization on Jl. Mampang, South Jakarta. He lives with his
\nfamily in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In my opinion, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has
\nfailed to realize his election promises. The recent fuel price
\nincreases prove that SBY is not empathetic.<\/p>\n
During the election campaigns, he said the people's welfare
\nwas everything to him.<\/p>\n
Based on a survey that we just carried out, people actually do
\nnot oppose the fuel price rises. What makes them angry is that
\nthe government increased the prices prior to the fasting month.<\/p>\n
The people had hoped the government would delay the increases
\nuntil next year.<\/p>\n
In the legal sector, I do not see that SBY has made any great
\nachievements. I see that his administration, or at least law
\nenforcers, are discriminative in fighting against corruption.<\/p>\n
The corruption case in the General Elections Commission (KPU)
\nis an example. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is
\nnot investigating a former KPUD member who is now a member of his
\nCabinet.<\/p>\n

Frankly, I pity him. Indonesia has faced a lot of problems
\nunder his leadership -- natural disasters and many other
\nincidents.<\/p>\n
The Bali bomb blasts being the most recent national tragedy.<\/p>\n
I think within one year he has tried to do many things, but he
\nfaces too many problems. In terms of fighting corruption, he
\nwants to show that he is serious by investigating a number of
\nembezzlers.<\/p>\n
I support his policies, except the recent fuel price hike.<\/p>\n
He increased fuel prices by 169 percent on average, while
\npeople were entering the fasting month. It has caused the prices
\nof all commodities to increase significantly.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the cash assistance is only distributed to a
\nlimited number of needy people. I hope that the government will
\nallocate more money for helping poor families.<\/p>\n
