SBY embarrassed by graft<\/p>\n
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono admitted on Friday night he
\nwas embarrassed by the fact that the endemic corruption has been
\nplaguing Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim country.<\/p>\n
He said that during the APEC summit on Nov. 20-21 in Chile,
\nthe leaders of the group's 20 member-countries talked
\nenthusiastically and freely about how to fight corruption.<\/p>\n
\"But as the new president of Indonesia with a mandate from 215
\nmillion people, I was ashamed to discuss it because of widespread
\ncorruption in our country,\" Susilo told an anticorruption program
\nbroadcast live by state-run TVRI on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
The program, called \"Anticorruption Yell\" sponsored by the
\nofficial Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), was attended by
\ntop law enforcers, including Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh
\nand National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar.<\/p>\n
A number of Cabinet ministers were also at attendance. So were
\nHouse of Representative Speaker Agung Laksono and People's
\nRepresentatives Council (DPD) chairman Ginandjar Karsasmita.<\/p>\n
The program featured several noted singers and artists,
\nincluding Inul Daratista and Titik Puspa, who read out
\nanticorruption poems during the event directed by former
\njournalist and film director Arswendo Atmowiloto.<\/p>\n
Before the program was closed, Susilo, who is leading the
\nnational anticorruption drive, and other top officials inked
\nantigraft messages on a white canvas.<\/p>\n
\"Let's build a clean Indonesia. Clean from corruption,\" wrote
\nthe President.<\/p>",
