The School of Business and Management (SBM) ITB, through its 3T\nCommunity Service Programme 2026, has organised an activity titled\n\u201cVillage Entrepreneurship Empowerment Model Based on Circular Economy:\nCoconut Shell Charcoal Production with Appropriate Technology\u201d in Adabai\nVillage, Seram Bagian Timur District, Maluku.<\/p>\n
The programme, which has run for several months, forms part of SBM\nITB\u2019s efforts to promote village economic empowerment based on local\npotential using a circular economy approach. The activities were\nimplemented in two main phases: training and workshops, and practical\nproduction experience in processing charcoal from coconut shells.<\/p>\n
Evy Rachmawati Chaldun, head of the community service team and SBM\nITB lecturer, explained that Adabai Village possesses abundant coconut\npotential that has not yet been fully optimised within the economic\nvalue chain.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to encourage the community not only to sell coconuts in raw\nform, but to process shell waste into economically valuable charcoal.\nThis is not merely about production, but about building a sustainable\nvillage business model,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n
The activities focused on entrepreneurship workshops and\nstrengthening business management capacity. The sessions featured\nspeakers from various institutions.<\/p>\n
R.A. Aisah Asnawi from the Faculty of Economics and Business at\nPattimura University provided perspectives on developing local\npotential-based entrepreneurship in Maluku. She emphasised the\nimportance of forming business groups to enable more structured\ngovernance in managing coconut charcoal businesses as a foundation for\nshared enterprise sustainability.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe success of village businesses depends not only on production,\nbut also on solid teamwork systems,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
Listiyah provided training on the coconut charcoal burning process,\nfrom selecting suitable shells to producing quality charcoal.<\/p>\n
Subsequently, production management material for coconut charcoal was\npresented by Evy Rachmawati Chaldun, who outlined technical production\naspects, burning process efficiency, and the importance of maintaining\nquality standards so that products can compete in wider markets.<\/p>\n
According to Evy, this practical approach is important so that\ncommunities understand not only the theory but can implement production\nprocesses independently. \u201cThis direct mentoring aims to give communities\ngenuine confidence in starting a business. The model is designed to be\nsimple, affordable, and replicable,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Desy Kharohmayani discussed business financial management\nand the application of circular economy principles in the coconut\ncharcoal business model. She explained how waste can be processed again\ninto revenue sources and how to keep financial records.<\/p>\n
The workshop, held on 6 February 2026, was conducted interactively\nwith active discussion between participants and speakers. Village\nresidents, youth leaders, and local business operators demonstrated\nstrong enthusiasm towards the material, which was deemed relevant to\nlocal economic needs.<\/p>\n
In this activity, in addition to lecturers, SBM ITB undergraduate and\npostgraduate students were involved in the entire community service\nprogramme.<\/p>\n
The activity continued with direct practical experience in coconut\ncharcoal production using appropriate technology. Participants were\nintroduced to the process of burning coconut shells using a modified\ndrum as a simple yet effective production tool. White smoke billowing\nfrom the burning drum illustrated the real process of transforming\ncoconut shell waste into economically valuable charcoal.<\/p>\n
The service team guided residents through each stage, from raw\nmaterial selection, techniques for arranging shells in the drum, air\ncirculation regulation, to charcoal cooling processes to maintain\nquality.<\/p>\n
The circular economy concept formed the core of this programme.\nCoconut shell waste that was previously unutilised is now processed into\ncharcoal. In future, the product also has potential to be developed into\ncharcoal briquettes or other derivative products with higher added\nvalue.<\/p>\n
This approach is expected to increase community income whilst\nreducing waste. Additionally, the group-based business model encourages\ncollaboration amongst residents and strengthens village economic\nstructures.<\/p>\n
This programme is part of the 3T Community Service Programme 2026,\nimplemented during January\u2013April 2026 in Adabai Village.
