Saving Betawi culture<\/p>\n

Jakarta's native Betawi culture is part of the national
\nculture. As the provincial culture, it covers the local custom
\nand language as well as traditional arts that have high tourism
\nand educational values.<\/p>\n
In this era of globalization and cultural penetration by
\nforeign influences, the development of Betawi culture in
\nJakarta's pluralistic society is under threat. The younger
\ngeneration is almost unfamiliar with this culture, which is being
\neroded with the passage of time.<\/p>\n
TV dramas with a Betawi setting do not represent the true
\nethnic culture of this region, though non-Betawi people swallow
\nsuch audio-visual portrayals as reflecting the actual life of the
\nBetawi community.<\/p>\n
For this reason, it is necessary to discuss, plan and carry
\nout the construction of a Betawi cultural center as a source of
\ninformation and a place for art exhibitions and cultural
\nperformances that educates visitors by utilizing the 2004 Jakarta
\nregional budget.<\/p>\n
Ideally, this Betawi cultural center should open offices in
\nsix areas of the capital. To this end, the project should be
\nconsidered by all relevant circles -- the Jakarta City Council,
\nthe provincial government, municipal administrations, the Betawi
\nConsultative Body (Bamus Betawi), the Betawi Cultural Institute,
\nentrepreneurs, artists, academicians, youths and students.<\/p>\n
