Bonapasogit Communication Forum in Jakarta urges the
\ngovernment and appeals to all parties concerned to give serious
\nattention to the condition of Lake Toba in North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
Of late, the lake's condition has gone from bad to worse. The
\ndestruction of the forest through felling of trees in the entire
\nhilly area around Lake Toba, also on Samosir Island, has
\ndestroyed its function as a water catchment area.<\/p>\n
According to observations made by the forum and clarification
\nby local inhabitants half a month ago, there has been an
\nincreasing decline in the water level in the past 15 years,
\nplunging by about four meters.<\/p>\n
Conditions will worsen for inhabitants and the ecosystem is
\nthe problem is not immediately addressed.<\/p>\n
Led by M. Tampubolon, the six-member team observed that
\nSamosir, formerly known for its produce like onions, peanuts and
\nlivestock of cows and buffaloes, is no longer an island because
\nit has become one with the mainland of Sumatra at the foot of
\nMount Pasuk Buhit.<\/p>\n
And the canal Tano Ponggol, built in Dutch colonial times and
\nseparating Samosir and Pengurusan subdistrict on the mainland, no
\nlonger functions because it is overgrown with trees and
\nunderbrush.<\/p>\n
