Save GAM facilities for Aceh<\/p>\n

Mass media reports on the success of the Indonesian Military
\n(TNI) and police in immobilizing forces of the Free Aceh Movement
\n(GAM) can indeed serve as a positive campaign and, at the same
\ntime, a deterrent to the separatists, prompting their speedy
\nsurrender.<\/p>\n
However, some of the military\/police success needs correction
\nand evaluation, particularly in connection with the burning of
\ncars and other operational vehicles owned by GAM. According to
\nreports, the military\/police had to do so to prevent GAM from
\ncarrying on their action.<\/p>\n
This could create a negative image of Indonesian soldiers and
\npolice, who may be seen as committing destruction, while they are
\njust trying to win the hearts of local people. The behavior of
\nGAM members, who are fond of burning schools and village homes,
\nshould not be countered by the same deed. Military\/police are in
\nAceh to fight against enemies and relieve the Acehnese of their
\nsuffering, instead of destroying facilities.<\/p>\n
In my view, the GAM facilities already seized can still be
\nused by military\/police for their intelligence maneuvers and
\nhumanitarian activities, as well as by volunteers and village
\nauthorities for their participation in integrated operations to
\nrehabilitate the war-torn region.<\/p>\n
