        "content": "<p>Save forests first<\/p>\n<p>From Pikiran Rakyat<\/p>\n<p>With reference to a letter which appeared in Pikiran Rakyat on<br>\nFeb. 6, basically blaming a state enterprise for the<br>\nmismanagement of forests, I believe we should examine the origins<br>\nof the company; in this case, state forestry corporation PT<br>\nPerhutani, which was set up sometime before 1978 to rescue<br>\nseverely damaged forest areas. Thereafter, its operation focused<br>\non large-scale reforestation, particularly in West Java.<\/p>\n<p>Harvesting followed only after forest conditions became<br>\nconducive to logging, which was managed according to the rules in<br>\nforce at the time. Presently, illegal logging is widespread due<br>\nto the worsening economy and soaring prices of basic needs, aside<br>\nfrom the misinterpretation of reforms.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, global warming resulting from technological<br>\ndevelopment produces the greenhouse effect, and the El Nino and<br>\nLa Nina weather anomalies have caused protracted droughts and<br>\nexcessive rain, which are all further worsened by forest looting.<\/p>\n<p>So, it would produce more positive results to strive to save<br>\nthe devastated forests first, instead of accusing each other, and<br>\nthe extant regional forestry regulations need to be enforced in<br>\nareas outside Java, where destruction has reached staggering<br>\nproportions.<\/p>\n<p>ASEP BUDDY MULYONO, Bandung<\/p>",
