        "content": "<p>Saudi Arabia launched its second national airline, Riyadh Air, on\nWednesday (10\/6\/2026), following a delay of more than a year. A white\nand lavender-branded Boeing 787 Dreamliner bound for London took off at\n02:30 local time, as the kingdom strives to defy the economic turmoil\ntriggered by the Middle East war to reduce its economic dependence on\noil. Riyadh Air itself will be based in Jeddah. The kingdom\u2019s second\nstate-owned carrier is intended to help transform the capital into a\nglobal hub to rival Dubai, the world\u2019s busiest city for international\npassengers. \u201cWe want to bring luxury, we want to bring refinement, we\nwant to bring back elegance,\u201d the CEO of Riyadh Air told AFP. The launch\nwas previously planned for 2025, but was hampered by delivery delays\nfrom Boeing, which has experienced a series of manufacturing and safety\nproblems in recent years, along with the escalation of conflict in the\nMiddle East. The US-Israel war on Iran caused Tehran to lash out, firing\nthousands of drones and missiles at targets in Gulf states, including\nairports, deemed to have American interests. \u201cI think Riyadh, because of\nits geographic location, at this time, is not too affected\u201d by the\nattacks, the CEO said. \u201cYou have trials and tribulations, you win some,\nyou lose some, you make progress, sometimes you have setbacks, but you\nhave succeeded, and today we have succeeded,\u201d the CEO added. Riyadh Air is\nowned by the US$900 billion Public Investment Fund, the main vehicle for\nthe ambitious Vision 2030 economic reforms of de facto ruler Crown\nPrince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).
