Satellite towns not yet self-sufficient: Expert<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): They may claim to be \"self-sufficient\" but an
\nurban expert says most of the new towns that have mushroomed
\naround Jakarta are nothing but satellite cities.<\/p>\n
A self-sufficient city (Kota Mandiri) should be able to
\nprovide not only housing, but an economy of its own, including
\nindustries which can generate jobs for its residents, Muhammad
\nDanisworo of the Bandung Technology Institute said yesterday.<\/p>\n
In short, it could exist independently of Jakarta, Danisworo
\ntold The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
He said only Depok, of the many new towns developing around
\nJakarta, came close to the description.<\/p>\n
There is a tendency for developers to mix up the term \"self-
\nsufficient city\" with \"satellite city\", Danisworo said.<\/p>\n
A satellite city is one whose existence relies on the major
\nneighboring conurbation, he said. People live in satellite
\ncities, but commute daily to the major city to work, he said.<\/p>\n
Self-sufficient cities should be at least 60 kilometers away
\nfrom Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Most of the towns being developed are too close to Jakarta,
\nand some are even built within Jakarta and yet they still carry
\nthe tag Kota Mandiri, he said.<\/p>\n
He described these towns as \"sleeping cities\" because people
\nsleep there but work in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He warned that the mushrooming of satellite towns around
\nJakarta could eventually pose a huge burden on the capital.<\/p>\n
\"The city administration has to think about the environmental
\nimpact created by the growth of satellite cities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He warned that Jakarta would not be able to build roads fast
\nenough to accommodate the growing number of private cars owned by
\npeople living in the satellite towns.<\/p>\n
Jakarta is also losing potential tax revenue because people in
\nsatellite towns pay taxes to administrations under the West Java
\nprovincial government, he said.<\/p>\n
Danisworo said these satellite towns must be developed to
\neventually become self-sufficient cities with enough jobs for
\ntheir residents.<\/p>\n
\"People then won't have to commute to Jakarta and this will
