        "content": "<p>Satelindo to widen phone service<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): PT Satelit Palapa Indonesia (Satelindo) will<br>\nspend Rp 450 billion (US$199.3 million) this year on the<br>\nexpansion of its cellular telephone facilities in Bali, Bandung,<br>\nJakarta, Semarang, Surabaya and Yogyakarta, an executive said.<\/p>\n<p>\"For starting our new branch office in Surabaya, East Java, we<br>\nhave invested Rp 50 billion,\" the company's business director,<br>\nAdi R. Adiwoso, told a press conference yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>East Java Governor Basofi Sudirman is expected to inaugurate<br>\nSatelindo's branch office in Surabaya on Aug. 7. The office will<br>\nintroduce the company's products, such as the Global System for<br>\nMobile (GSM) cellular telephones and international direct dialing<br>\nservices.<\/p>\n<p>\"By operating our new branch office in Surabaya, we will reach<br>\nthis year's target of serving 80,000 customers in Java and Bali,\"<br>\nAdi said.<\/p>\n<p>By 1998, the number of Satelindo's customers will likely reach<br>\n350,000 countrywide, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the company also plans to inaugurate its new branch<br>\noffice in Bandung, West Java, next month.<\/p>\n<p>Satelindo, set up with a capital of Rp 500 billion in 1993,<br>\nhas, so far, sold 35,000 cellular telephones,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Satelindo's president, Iwa Sewaka, said recently that its<br>\ninvestments in 1995 will increase rapidly because of the<br>\ncompany's plan to realize all of its infrastructure projects<br>\nwithin one year instead of three years, as planned.<\/p>\n<p>Satelindo operates satellites and provides services in digital<br>\ncellular telephones and international calls. The company is 45<br>\npercent owned by a subsidiary of the Bimantara Group, a<br>\nconglomerate chaired by one of President Soeharto's sons; 25<br>\npercent by DeteMobil, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom; 22.5<br>\npercent by PT Telkom; and 7.5 percent by PT Indosat.
