Satelindo operates new gateway in Medan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Private telecommunications company PT Satelindo
\nwill operate a new gateway in Medan, North Sumatra, to support
\nits international telecommunications services.<\/p>\n
The additional gateway is scheduled to be officially launched
\nby Director General of Post and Telecommunications Djakaria
\nPurawidjaja in Medan today.<\/p>\n
Company director of international calls and acting satellite
\ndirector, Janto Warjanto, said that the gateway had a capacity of
\n120 circuits, extendible up to 600 circuits.<\/p>\n
\"The new gateway will support our network which previously
\nrelied only on a gateway in Jakarta,\" he told reporters during a
\nreception to introduce the company's new management here
\nWednesday evening.<\/p>\n
Janto said that Satelindo had also planned another gateway in
\nBali scheduled for operation in the first quarter of next year.<\/p>\n
Satelindo, established in January 1993, is one of the private
\ncompanies in the country licensed by the government to run
\nsatellite telecommunications services. The company also runs the
\nGlobal System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular telephones
\nand international telecommunications.<\/p>\n
The company is owned by DeTeMobil of Germany, state-owned PT
\nTelkom and PT Indosat, and PT Bimagraha Telekomindo .<\/p>\n
Under a minister of tourism, post and telecommunications
\ndecree, the government has awarded the exclusive rights to
\ninternational telecommunications services in the country to
\nIndosat and Satelindo until 2005.<\/p>\n
Indosat announced earlier this month that competition in the
\ninternational telecommunications market was getting stiffer.
\nIndosat, which last year had an average of 91.2 percent of the
\nmarket share, predicted to see its market share decline to 86
\npercent this year and to 80 percent by 2000.<\/p>\n
Janto said that Satelindo and Telkom were also scheduled to
\nsign a satellite cooperation agreement with Telkom.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia is well-known for its satellite industry and has
\nbeen a leader in the business since 1976,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"So we have to keep our expertise by, among others, setting up
\ncooperation among the increasing number of satellite operators in
\nIndonesia.\"<\/p>\n
Instead of fighting each other, it would be much better for
\nIndonesian satellite operators to cooperate, he added.<\/p>\n
He said that through such cooperation, Indonesia would keep
\nits shares in the market and successfully compete in, at least,
\nthe Asian region.<\/p>\n
In addition to Satelindo and Telkom, satellite operators in
\nthe country include PT PSN, PT M2A, PT Datakom Asia and PT ACeS.<\/p>\n
Janto said that Satelindo would also sign an agreement today
\non multimedia services with Telkom.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Satelindo introduced its new management who
\nincluded incoming president Saleh Gunawan replacing Iwa Sewaka;
\nS. Willem Ouwens as cellular director; and Gerard Christiaan
\nMeerman as finance director. Gunawan, 53, was also appointed
\ndirector of business development.<\/p>\n
Saleh said that Satelindo last year booked Rp 650 billion in
\nrevenues, up by 343 percent over 1995 and Rp 85 billion in
\nprofits, up by over 100 percent over 1995. (icn)<\/p>",
