Sarwono announces five best performers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State Minister of Environment Sarwono
\nKusumaatmadja announced yesterday the names of five manufacturing
\ncompanies rated by the government among the best in managing
\ntheir waste.<\/p>\n
The five companies, including PT Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper,
\nwhich was criticized for polluting the Ciujung River in Serang,
\nWest Java, in 1992, were rated \"green\" under the new rating
\nsystem Sarwono's office is introducing for the way companies show
\nconcern toward the environment.<\/p>\n
Sarwono said 187 manufacturing companies were assessed under
\nthe Clean River Project and none qualified for placement in the
\n\"gold\" category, which is reserved for companies with the finest
\nenvironmental protection performance.<\/p>\n
After gold comes green, with five companies qualifying for
\nthis category. The blue, red and black categories follow.<\/p>\n
Sarwono, speaking at the closing ceremony of the national
\nconference on environmental protection, which was attended by
\nVice President Try Sutrisno, only announced the names of the five
\ncompanies in the green category.<\/p>\n
Besides Indah Kiat, the other four in this category are PT
\nPindad, a state arms manufacturer in Bandung, West Java, PT
\nTifico and PT Kumafiber, both textile producers in Tangerang, and
\nPT Cheil Samsung Astra, which produces monosodium glutamate in
\nPasuruan, East Java.<\/p>\n
Sarwono said 61 companies fell into the blue category and 115
\ninto the red category. Six others were listed in the black
\ncategory, which is reserved for the worst polluters.<\/p>\n
The new rating system is intended to motivate improved
\nawareness of the need for environmental management among the
