Sardono to showcase `Nobody's Body'<\/p>\n

\"December in the year 2002; the number two begins it, and the
\nnumber two ends it. Nothing changes, we are still in a milieu of
\nterror and horror,\" said noted Indonesian dancer Sardono W.
\nKusumo in a media conference here.<\/p>\n
An artist's reflection on the year gone bad, and typical of
\nhis profession, Sardono further expressed this meditation through
\nhis creation titled Nobody's Body, first performed during the
\nopening of Singapore's Esplanade in October, and will open here
\non Dec. 29.<\/p>\n
\"It was inspired by events happening in the region, but mostly
\nby the Bali bombing,\" he said, asserting the production was
\neverything he had perceived of the happenings around him
\nthroughout the year.<\/p>\n
Focusing on the human body, with its complex system of nerves
\nand muscles, Sardono uses it as a metaphor for Asia's tropical
\nrainforest ecosystem.<\/p>\n
One of the props used will be a traditional wok, which Sardono
\nused as a metaphor for survival.<\/p>\n
\"The wok is a utensil for food, but because of its shape it
\ncould also suddenly be small boats. It could be a metaphor for
\npeople living in their own little spaces, isolated,\" he
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
In a review of the October performance at the Esplanade,
\nStephanie Burridge of The Business Times said the performance
\n\"explored ambiguities, tensions, uncertainties and dilemmas of
\nthe contemporary world\". She described the performance as
\n\"powerful\" and \"pessimistic\".<\/p>\n
With Sardono as choreographer and noted musician Toni Prabowo
\nas music director, Nobody's Body not only explored the human
\nbody, but also different sounds and music that have emanated from
\ndifferent cultures of the world, such as from Tibet, Siberia and
\nthe Beijing opera.<\/p>\n
\"It will be an interesting aesthetic experience, visually
\ndramatic, with some acrobatics,\" Sardono promised, adding that he
\nhoped viewers would interpret for themselves the feelings invoked
\nby the performance on stage.<\/p>\n
Nobody's Body will be performed on Dec. 29 and Dec. 30, 2002, at
\nGedung Kesenian Jakarta, Jl Gedung Kesenian 1, Central Jakarta,
