Sapuan followed Bulog procedures, witnesses say<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two executives of the State Logistics Agency
\n(Bulog)'s employee foundation, Yanatera, said on Tuesday former
\nBulog deputy chief Sapuan followed procedures when he ordered the
\nrelease of Rp 35 billion earlier this year.<\/p>\n
Administrative chief Asep Permana and executive manager
\nKamarudin Jamal told the South Jakarta District Court they
\nbelieved Sapuan was within his authority in asking for the funds.<\/p>\n
Sapuan is standing trial on charges of embezzling the
\nfoundation's money. He has insisted the money was requested by
\nPresident Abdurrahman Wahid to fund the government's humanitarian
\nprogram in Aceh, although the money found its way to people close
\nto the President, including his masseur Suwondo, who is currently
\nat large.<\/p>\n
Asep said he prepared the memorandums and the checks for the
\nRp 35 billion at the request of Sapuan.<\/p>\n
He also said it was not unusual for top Bulog leaders to issue
\ninternal memos asking for loans from the foundation.<\/p>\n
Kamarudin, who said he was on leave at the time the money was
\ntransferred, also testified that the Bulog chief at the time,
\nminister of industry and trade Jusuf Kalla, had given Sapuan the
\nfull authority to run the agency.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Lalu Mariyun adjourned the trial until next
