Sanitation poor at refugee camps<\/p>\n
PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Head of the West Kalimantan health
\noffice H.M. Torisz has expressed concern over physical conditions
\nin a number of refugee camps accommodating people who fled the
\nSambas ethnic conflict.<\/p>\n
Torisz urged the water company owned by the Pontianak
\nmayoralty to ensure the provision of adequate water supplies at
\nthe camp compounds as the poor water quality has caused some of
\nthe refugees to suffer from diarrhea.<\/p>\n
"This has been worsened by the miserable conditions under
\nwhich they are living," Torisz said, as quoted by Antara news
\nagency on Thursday. He did not give details of the number of
\npatients catching the disease.<\/p>\n
The camps had been hit by a scarcity of water, thereby forcing
\nhousewives to cook, not using tap water or other potable water,
\nbut using rain water they collected during heavy rains, he said.<\/p>\n
He said that local health officials had continuously monitored
\nliving conditions at the camps, especially following the
\ndisappearance of water during the current prolonged dry season.<\/p>\n
"Without any preventive measures, the number of people
\ninfected with diarrhea is feared to increase," one of the
\nrefugees said.<\/p>",
