Sand quarrying continues<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Sand quarriers in the village of Pasir Buncir,
\nCaringin district, Bogor regency, are continuing with their
\nillegal operations despite an official ban by the Bogor mining
\noffice.<\/p>\n
The head of the office, Rahmat Gandana, said on Tuesday that
\nhis office had closed the sand quarry in the village as the site
\nwas protected to conserve water reabsorption.<\/p>\n
Claiming to have no knowledge of the unlicensed removal of
\nsand, he admitted that the potential for sand quarrying in the
\narea was great.<\/p>\n
According to Rahmat, the regency had 41 Category C (sand and
\ngravel) quarries, but 31 of them had been closed leaving only ten
\noperational.<\/p>\n
Sources in the Bogor administration said illegal quarrying was
\na complex issue because it involved social, economic and
\nenvironmental aspects.<\/p>\n
They added, however, that a multifaceted control program
\ninvolving all the relevant parties had been launched and had
\nresulted in the closure of 1,710 quarries sites in Gunung
\nPongkor, with around 6,000 miners being affected.<\/p>\n
Currently only 100 people are engaged in a small-scale mining
\noperation in Gunung Pongkor, where state-owned mining firm PT
\nAneka Tambang is mining gold. (21)<\/p>",
