Sand mining criticized by expert<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: The impact of sand mining on the environment
\nin Riau, not territorial considerations, should serve as the
\nbasis for the suspension of all sand mining activities in the
\nprovince, a university expert said here on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Tengku Amriful Amri, an environmental expert at the University
\nof Riau, told Antara that the waters of Riau would continue to
\nsuffer considerable damage unless the halt of mining operations
\nwas also based on environment concerns.<\/p>\n
He said the government had decided to suspend the mining,
\ntransport and sale of sand in Riau because the activities had
\nexpanded the territory of Singapore by six kilometers.<\/p>\n
Tengku, however, admitted that Singapore's coastal expansion
\nwould also lead to future conflict as Riau's territorial waters
\nwere increasingly being encroached upon. --Antara<\/p>",
