Sampang may sink next century<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Future residents of Sampang, East Java, may well
\nhave to learn to keep their heads above water as regency
\nofficials warn the town could be submerged in the next century.<\/p>\n
The head of the forestry and conservation office of Sampang
\nregency, Budi Yudji, said the prospect was a real likelihood
\nunless something was done about the problem of erosion and
\nmanagement of seawater.<\/p>\n
\"Based on scientific analysis, we cannot disregard the
\npossibility of Sampang sinking in the next 100 years, because the
\nstrutter and character of the land is difficult to absorb water,\"
\nBudi was quoted by Antara as saying yesterday.<\/p>\n
Sampang, a town of about 700,000 people, is located on the
\neastern tip of Madura Island.<\/p>\n
He explained that Sampang was always inundated during the
\nrainy season with between one meter to two meters of water
\nflowing from the surrounding hills.<\/p>\n
Forestration efforts had helped curb the degradation of the
\nland, but he deemed these efforts to be slow.<\/p>\n
He said more long term and strategic efforts should be made to
\nensure that the water from the surrounding hills flowed unimpeded
\nto the sea.<\/p>\n
\"If possible, dams should also be built to help control the
\nfloods because they also brings mudslides, making the whole area
\nand the river even more shallow,\" he said.<\/p>",
