        "content": "<p>JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ministry of Public Works (PU) has begun\naccelerating the construction of sabo dams in disaster-affected areas on\nthe island of Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>This follows the discovery of a large amount of timber material along\nthe national road towards Gayo Lues, which has the potential to be\ncarried by the current to downstream areas.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo stated that the timber\nmaterial is feared to flow back to areas such as Aceh Tamiang if not\nimmediately addressed through sediment control from upstream\nregions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw that on the national road towards Gayo Lues there is still a\nlot of wood. I\u2019m afraid this will flow down to Tamiang again. So, the\nMinistry of Public Works has started working on the sabo dam project\neven though it shouldn\u2019t have begun yet,\u201d said Dody, in a press release\non Saturday (18\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>In general, the Ministry of Public Works has recorded significant\nprogress in handling post-disaster infrastructure in Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p>On the local road network, out of a total of 2,421 affected road\nsections, 2,277 sections or about 94 percent have been reopened.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 792 bridges out of a total of 1,181 units or about 67\npercent have resumed operations.<\/p>\n<p>Dody assured that the condition of national roads and bridges\ngenerally poses no significant issues.<\/p>\n<p>Although landslides occurred at several points, they were handled\nquickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there are no problems with national roads and bridges. There were\nlandslides, but we could resolve them in less than 24 hours,\u201d he\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, special attention is still focused on Aceh Province,\nwhich faces challenges in the form of high rainfall and mud deposits in\ndownstream areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe progress in Aceh, the main problem is actually mud and it\u2019s\nstill raining today. With conditions like this, the work must be\naccelerated,\u201d said Dody.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to sabo dam construction, the Ministry of Public Works is\nalso strengthening coordination with local governments and the\nMeteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in implementing\nweather modification.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to accelerate the cleaning of residential areas are also\nbeing carried out through labour-intensive programmes, particularly in\naffected areas such as Pidie Jaya and Aceh Tamiang.<\/p>",
