S. Korea baseball team thrashes Indonesia 15-0<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): South Korea crushed Indonesia 15-0 at the Asian
\nBaseball Championship in Taipei on Friday, sending Indonesia to
\nthe bottom of the standings with four losses.<\/p>\n
Indonesian lost to Japan 17-0 on Tuesday, fell to the
\nPhilippines 7-3 on Wednesday and was beaten 16-0 by host Chinese
\nTaipei on Thursday.<\/p>\n
With its one victory over Indonesia, the Philippines finished
\nin fourth with South Korea in third.<\/p>\n
South Korea will face the loser of Friday evening's game
\nbetween Chinese Taipei and Japan in Saturday's semifinals. The
\nwinner of Friday's game will go directly to Sunday's final.<\/p>\n
\"Some of our hitters managed to reach third base, but the
\nbatters behind them failed to hit so we didn't score any runs,\"
\nthe chief delegate of the Indonesian contingent, Harry Trisnadi,
\ntold The Jakarta Post in a telephone interview from Taipei.<\/p>\n
\"Our best batters could hit some of the fastballs but the
\nothers failed to do so. We have to improve their skills so there
\nwill be no gap between our hitters.\"<\/p>\n
Harry, the vice president of the Indonesian Baseball and
\nSoftball Association, also said that national hitters and
\npitchers were not familiar with fastballs.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesian hitters are not familiar with fastballs. Our
\npitchers throw between 120 and 125 kilometers per hour, which is
\nabout the same as the Filipino pitchers.<\/p>\n
\"On the other hand, pitchers from Taipei, Japan and South
\nKorea can throw nearly 140 kilometers per hour.\"<\/p>\n
Harry said Indonesia's outfielders had to work harder because
\nthe outfield here was larger than what they played on back home.<\/p>\n
\"In Taipei we played on a larger diamond than what we have
\nback home at the Bung Karno Baseball Stadium in Senayan, which is
\nsmaller due to limited space.<\/p>\n
\"Our outfielders had to adapt quickly to the larger diamond,
\nbut they failed. There were times when they could run down the
\nfly balls easily.<\/p>\n
\"Problems occurred when our opponent's batters hit singles
\nthat landed between our infielders and outfielders. The
\noutfielders have to run faster (to make the catch) and prevent
\nthe runners from reaching first base.\"<\/p>\n
Harry said he approached Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA)
\nsecretary-general Maeda Yokichi of Japan to inquire about
\ntraining possibilities for Indonesian players.<\/p>\n
\"We need a specialized pitching coach and I asked BFA about
\nthe possibility of sending Indonesian players and coaches to
\ntrain with Japanese baseball clubs for a couple of months.<\/p>\n
\"The batters can also use a faster pitching machine to get
\nused to facing fastballs.\"<\/p>\n
The Indonesian team is scheduled to arrive back home on Monday
