Ryamizard dissolves Bakorstanasda Jaya<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Ryamizard
\nRyacudu on Thursday dissolved the Jakarta chapter of the much
\nfeared Agency for the Coordination of Support for the Development
\nof National Stability (Bakorstanasda Jaya).<\/p>\n
The dissolution of the agency was marked by a ceremony at the
\ncity military command headquarters in East Jakarta, led by
\nRyamizard.<\/p>\n
The chapter was shutdown only three days after the Indonesian
\nMilitary (TNI) dissolved the national institution (Bakorstanas)
\non Monday.<\/p>\n
Ryamizard insisted that the dissolution would not compromise
\nthe existing security supervision cooperation with several
\ninstitutions, including the Jakarta Prosecutor's office, the city
\npolice and the city administration. The cooperation has lasted
\nfor 12 years.<\/p>\n
\"The security cooperation and coordination will be maintained
\nwithout the presence of the organization,\" said the two-star
\ngeneral after the ceremony.<\/p>\n
City Military command spokesman Lt. Col. Djazairi Nachrowi
\nsaid the coordination and cooperation among the institutions in
\nsafeguarding the city would be accommodated in any form.<\/p>\n
\"The coordination can be effected through informal mechanisms.
\nWe can contact them anytime to coordinate measures to safeguard
\nthe city should it face a security threat,\" he told The Jakarta
\nPost by phone.<\/p>\n
Bakorstanasda consisted of 40 members from both military and
\ncivil institutions, including the city police and the city
\nprosecutor's office.<\/p>\n
Ryamizard, who also chaired the institution, said city
\nmilitary command officers who were members of the institution
\nwould be stationed at several posts at the command.<\/p>\n
\"The non-military members of the institution will be sent back
\nto their former institutions,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Nachrowi said the highest ranking military members in the
\ninstitution was colonel. \"There were eight colonels in the
\nagency.\"<\/p>\n
Bakorstanas was established by former president Soeharto in
\nSeptember 1998 to replace the notorious Restoration of Security
\nand Public Order Command (Kopkamtib). The agency was established
\nto deal with any perceived problems to the country's stability.<\/p>\n
The agency screened prospective state officials and was also
\nbelieved to have been used by former president Soeharto's New
\nOrder administration to curb government critics, including
\nstudent protesters.<\/p>\n
The institution has also taken action against anyone believed
\nto have links with the banned Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).<\/p>\n
President Abdurrahman Wahid ordered the dissolution of the
