        "content": "<p>Russian warships here on peace mission<\/p>\n<p>An Indonesian marine patrols Tanjung Priok Port where five ships<br>\nof the Russian Pacific fleet, including Missile Cruiser Varyag<br>\n(in background), are anchored in the first Russian warship visit<br>\nsince 1968.<\/p>\n<p>The four other warships (unseen) are antisubmarine warfare<br>\nships Panteleev, Admiral Tributs and auxiliary ships Pechenga and<br>\nKalar.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Vice Adm. Sergei Avramenko, the warships will be<br>\nanchored at the port until Nov. 2. They will continue their trip<br>\nto neighboring Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam before returning<br>\nto their home base. The warships went to India prior to visiting<br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is our first visit to Indonesia in 37 years. We have<br>\narranged some meetings with high-ranking Indonesian officials and<br>\nexpect there will be mutual meetings to develop military<br>\nrelations between both countries,\" Avramenko said, referring to<br>\nplanned meetings with Minister of Defense Juwono Sudarsono,<br>\nIndonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Endriartono Sutarto and<br>\nNavy Chief of Staff Adm. Slamet Soebijanto.<\/p>\n<p>\"I guess there will be no problems in enhancing cooperation<br>\n(between the Russian and Indonesian militaries). We, the<br>\nRussians, are ready to do so as we come for peace,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia is developing closer defense ties with Russia after<br>\nfacing problems in procuring military equipment from the United<br>\nStates, which imposed an embargo as a response to reports on<br>\nalleged gross human rights abuses in East Timor during, before<br>\nand after the 1998 vote for independence.<\/p>\n<p>Under the administration of then president Megawati<br>\nSoekarnoputri, the Indonesian Air Force and the Army went on a<br>\n\"shopping spree\" with the purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi jet<br>\nfighters for the former and two Mi-35 assault helicopters for the<br>\nlatter.<\/p>\n<p>During the three-day visit, the crews of the warships will<br>\nalso visit Satria Mandala War Museum.
