        "content": "<p>Russia hails ASEAN's bid for nuclear weapons ban<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Russia came out yesterday in support of ASEAN's<br>\nbattle for a ban on nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeni Primakov said after<br>\nmeeting with President Soeharto that Moscow expects prompt<br>\nimplementation of the agreement on nuclear arms ban.<\/p>\n<p>\"All of us together want the nuclear weapon ban agreement<br>\nimplemented as soon as possible,\" Primakov told journalists<br>\nafter paying a courtesy call on President Soeharto.<\/p>\n<p>In their joint communique issued here on Sunday, ASEAN foreign<br>\nministers urged all nuclear weapon states to extend their<br>\ncooperation by acceding to the protocol of the Southeast Asian<br>\nNuclear Weapon Free Zone agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Signed by ASEAN leaders in a summit in Bangkok last December,<br>\nthe agreement calls for a ban on producing, owning, using and<br>\nstockpiling nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>The United States refused to sign the agreement last year,<br>\nsaying it had reservations on several items of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Primakov said he and the President exchanged views on how to<br>\ncreate stability in the region and on the latest development in<br>\nthe South China Sea and the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono said Primakov also<br>\ndelivered a \"private\" letter from Russian President Boris Yeltsin<br>\nto President Soeharto.<\/p>\n<p>According to Moerdiono, Yeltsin invited Soeharto to visit<br>\nRussia.<\/p>\n<p>\"In fact, President Boris Yeltsin planned to visit Indonesia<br>\nlate last year but he had to cancel it for one reason or<br>\nanother,\" Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n<p>Primakov arrived here Sunday to attend the ASEAN Regional<br>\nForum ministerial meeting today and the post-ministerial meetings<br>\non Wednesday and Thursday.
