Russia bids to join APEC<\/p>\n
SEOUL (AFP): South Korea promised yesterday to support
\nRussia's bid to join the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
\nforum, officials here said.<\/p>\n
The promise was made by President Kim Young-Sam when he was
\nasked for support for Russia's bid by visiting Russian Prime
\nMinister Viktor Chernomyrdin, an aide of Kim said.<\/p>\n
\"It will be beneficial that Russia joins APEC,\" Kim was quoted
\nas telling Chernomyrdin by Kim's top advisor for security and
\nforeign affairs, Ryu Jong-Ha.<\/p>\n
APEC is a loose regional economic consultative body comprising
\n18 members, including the United States, Japan, Canada,
\nAustralia, South Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea,
\nChile, Southeast Asian Nations and China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n
APEC has decided to delay accepting any new member until the
\nend of 1996 with an agreement that it was time for APEC \"not to
\nenlarge but deepen.\"<\/p>\n
The most likely candidate to become the 19th APEC member is
\nVietnam. In addition, Columbia wants to join, but \"the general
\nunderstanding is that APEC now has too many members,\" a foreign
\nministry official told AFP.<\/p>\n
\"There is a strong doubt in the region whether Russia belongs
\nto the Asia-Pacific region,\" he said.<\/p>",
