The rupiah-to-US-dollar exchange rate closed stronger during Tuesday\n(10 March 2026) trading. The rupiah\u2019s appreciation was driven by market\noptimism following a statement by US President Donald Trump indicating\nthat the conflict with Iran would soon end.<\/p>\n
Based on market data at the close of trading in Jakarta on Tuesday\nevening, the rupiah moved stronger by 86 points, or 0.51 per cent, to\n16,863 per US dollar. This position represents an improvement compared\nto the previous close recorded at 16,949 per US dollar.<\/p>\n
Muhammad Amru Syifa, Research and Development at Indonesia Commodity\n& Derivatives Exchange (ICDX), stated that the rupiah\u2019s appreciation\nwas significantly influenced by US President Donald Trump\u2019s statement\nregarding geopolitical conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe statement helps alleviate some investor concerns about the\npotential for prolonged conflict, which had previously been feared to\ndisrupt global energy supplies and pressure prospects for global\neconomic growth,\u201d Amru said in Jakarta on Tuesday (10 March).<\/p>\n
Citing a Kyodo report, Donald Trump stated that the war with Iran,\ncurrently ongoing, is estimated to end soon. However, he denied that\ncomplete resolution would occur this week.<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s optimistic statement emerged amid a heated political\nsituation in Iran. Iran has just elected Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as\nits new Supreme Leader. Mojtaba replaces his father, Ayatollah Ali\nKhamenei, who died in the first wave of combined US-Israeli strikes.<\/p>\n
Mojtaba Khamenei is known to have very close ties with the Islamic\nRevolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). His election sparked global concerns\nthat the war, now entering its second week, would increasingly\ndestabilise the Middle East region.<\/p>\n
Trump himself expressed disappointment with the new leader\u2019s\nelection. \u201cWe think this will only cause the same problems for that\ncountry,\u201d Trump said, though he maintained that the US had achieved\nsignificant military successes.<\/p>\n
From a technical perspective, Amru explained that a correction in the\nUS dollar index provided room for developing-country currencies,\nincluding the rupiah, to move more stably.<\/p>\n
However, the market remained cautious about the direction of Federal\nReserve interest rate policy. If US inflation data and labour market\nconditions remained solid, the possibility of interest rates remaining\nhigher for longer would increase again, potentially strengthening the US\ndollar once more.<\/p>\n
\u201cRising energy prices are also a concern as they have the potential\nto increase the government\u2019s subsidy burden and trigger domestic\ninflation pressure. If geopolitical conflict continues long-term, global\nfinancial market volatility could trigger capital outflows,\u201d Amru\nconcluded.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Bank Indonesia\u2019s Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate\n(JISDOR) on Tuesday (10 March) also recorded strengthening to 16,879 per\nUS dollar from the previous day\u2019s position of 16,974 per US dollar.<\/p>\n
