The rupiah opened slightly stronger against the US dollar on Wednesday morning but is expected to face downward pressure as markets await the outcome of Bank Indonesia's Board of Governors Meeting. Analysts from Bank Woori Saudara, Permata Bank, and LPEM FEB UI broadly expect the central bank to hold its benchmark rate at 5.75%. Global factors, including rising US Treasury yields and elevated oil prices, are also limiting the rupiah's room for appreciation.

The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar opened slightly
stronger in Wednesday morning trading. Based on market data, the rupiah
rose 2 points or 0.01% to Rp17,860 per US dollar, compared with the
previous close of Rp17,862 per US dollar.

Despite opening in positive territory, the rupiah’s movement
throughout the day is expected to be overshadowed by cautious market
sentiment. Bank Woori Saudara analyst Rully Nova estimates the rupiah
could reverse course and weaken as the market awaits the outcome of Bank
Indonesia’s Board of Governors Meeting, which will be announced this
afternoon.

Rully projects the rupiah will trade in the range of Rp17,850 to
Rp17,900 per US dollar. The market’s main focus is on the benchmark
interest rate decision, or BI-Rate. Rully expects Bank Indonesia to hold
the rate at 5.75%, but predicts the monetary authority will be more
active in intervening in the foreign exchange and bond markets.

In line with this, Head of Macroeconomic & Financial Market
Research at Permata Bank, Faisal Rachman, as well as the Institute for
Economic and Social Research at the Faculty of Economics and Business,
University of Indonesia, also predict BI will maintain the interest rate
at 5.75%.

On the other hand, global sentiment continues to put pressure on the
rupiah. The rise in long-term US Treasury yields is a serious concern.
The 30-year yield was reported to have touched 5.34%, while the 10-year
yield stood at 4.75%. In addition, world oil prices remaining at high
levels further limits room for the rupiah to strengthen.

Market participants are now awaiting Bank Indonesia’s official
statement regarding the future direction of monetary policy to maintain
exchange rate stability amid global financial market uncertainty.
",
