Rumania and RI eye cooperation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto and Rumanian President Emil
\nConstantinescu held bilateral talks yesterday morning aimed at
\nstrengthening economic and political ties.<\/p>\n
In their 90-minute talks the two leaders underlined the
\nimportance of private sector participation, and exchange visits
\nby officials in strengthening economic bonds.<\/p>\n
Accompanied by their ministers, the two leaders also briefed
\neach other their domestic affairs.<\/p>\n
Constantinescu was accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs
\nAdrian Severin, Minister for Reform Ulm Spineanu and Minister of
\nFinance Mircea Ciumara.<\/p>\n
Soeharto was accompanied by Minister\/State Secretary
\nMoerdiono, Minister of Finance Mar'ie Muhammad and Minister of
\nDefense and Security Edi Sudradjat, who is acting foreign
\nminister while Ali Alatas is abroad.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono quoted Soeharto as saying yesterday the two
\ncountries need to get to know each other better. Both agreed to
\nexpand trade further.<\/p>\n
\"Rumania regards Indonesia as an important potential trading
\npartner in the region,\" Moerdiono said.<\/p>\n
On his arrival here Thursday, Constantinescu emphasized
\nthe importance of forging closer ties with Indonesia and
\ndescribed Asia-Pacific countries as key players in the world
\neconomy in the coming years.<\/p>\n
Rumania's exports to Indonesia from January to April stood at
\nUS$17.7 million, while its imports totaled $5.6 million.<\/p>\n
Yesterday evening Soeharto held a state banquet at State
\nPalace in Constantinescu's honor.<\/p>\n
In his address Soeharto praised Rumania's recent
\ntransformation into a modern and market-oriented economic
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
\"We closely watch the encouraging progress achieved by the
\nRumanian people and government, especially in politics, social
\nand economic fields,\" Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
He said national and regional stability have been key factors
\nin creating a conducive climate for Indonesia's development.<\/p>\n
\"Our success in maintaining dynamic domestic and regional
\nstability has contributed significantly to our successful
\nnational development,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto said it was important to establish not only good
\nbilateral but also regional links.<\/p>\n
For Indonesia, Europe is one of the most important trading
\npartners and the country would welcome any efforts to boost trade
\nand economic relations between the two regions, Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
\"A strong partnership between Europe and Asia will eventually
\nbenefit our national economy,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Constantinescu flies to Yogyakarta this morning enroute for a
\nbrief stopover in Bali before flying directly back to Rumania
