Rulling party hesitant to investigate Akbar<\/p>\n

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan)
\nstood behind its decision to postpone the establishment of a
\nHouse of Representatives special committee to investigate House
\nSpeaker Akbar Tandjung in a move that opposes protesters'
\ndemands.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan deputy chairman Roy B. Janis reiterated on
\nTuesday that it would only discuss the establishment of a House
\nspecial committee after the National Mandate Party (PAN) wrapped
\nup their national congress.<\/p>\n
"PAN is the one who asked to postpone the discussion. We
\nagreed considering that this matter should be discussed and
\ndecided on together," Roy said after a four-hour meeting with
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri and other PDI Perjuangan members at the
\nPresident's official residence in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of protesters from the Petition 50 task force and the
\nNew Order Watch Commission, went to the PDI Perjuangan office in
\nLenteng Agung, South Jakarta to protest the party's
\nindecisiveness to investigate Akbar.<\/p>\n
Other organizations, such as the Association of Islamic
\nStudents (HMI), Marhaen People's Movement and the Communication
\nForum of Islamic Parties, also took part in the protest.<\/p>\n
The rally forced the party to move its meeting to Megawati's
\nofficial residence on Jl. Teuku Umar in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In regard to the rally, Roy said the party would weigh the
\nprotesters' message.<\/p>\n
As much as 52.2 percent of House members supported the
\nestablishment of a special committee.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan remains undecided, but it is carefully
\ncontemplating its move so as not to upset its fragile relations
\nwith Akbar Tandjung and his Golkar party.<\/p>\n
Although they have yet to announce an official stance, the
\nparty has hinted that they would wait for the completion of the
\nlegal process on Akbar, who is being tried for allegedly misusing
\nRp 40 billion of State Logistics Agency (Bulog) funds.<\/p>",
