Rudy Hartono nominated as referee at Malaysia Open<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian badminton great Rudy Hartono was
\nnominated the official referee of the US$180,000 Malaysia Open in
\nJohor next July.<\/p>\n
Malaysia's New Strait Times daily reported on Sunday that the
\norganizing committee of the Malaysia Open championships chosed
\nRudy, an official of the Badminton Association of Indonesia
\n(PBSI) and a member of the International Badminton Federation
\n(IBF) honorary council, was aimed at attracting Indonesian stars
\nto join the six-star grand prix meet.<\/p>\n
The nomination was made at a meeting held by the committee
\nchaired by Hashim Harun of the Johor badminton association,
\nfollowing a doubt that Indonesian players will be reluctant to
\nmake a trip at the fourth Asian world grand prix stop staged at
\nJohor as they were afraid of any possible retaliation by
\nMalaysian fans.<\/p>\n
Malaysian Thomas Cup squad was troubled against Indonesian
\nfanatic crowd in its title defense attempt here last month,
\ncrashing to a 0-3 defeat. IBF honorary referee Roger Johansson
\nstopped the match, following disruptive gestures by home fans.<\/p>\n
Rudy was unavailable for confirmation yesterday as he is
\naccompanying Indonesian shuttlers to the Asia Cup invitational
\nchampionships in Beijing which will kick off today.<\/p>\n
A PBSI official Lutfi Hamid, in an attempt to ward off the
\nrumor about Indonesian shuttlers' absence in Johor, said
\nyesterday his side will likely parade a full team at the event.<\/p>\n
\"It is a big tournament. We will not waste much time to settle
\nour fear of home fans,\" Lutfi, who was Indonesian Thomas and Uber
\nCup team manager said.<\/p>\n
Indonesian shuttlers produced a men's singles All-Indonesian
\nfinal on their way to sweeping three titles at last year's
\nedition of the world's most lucrative badminton event in Kuching.
\nWorld badminton queen Susi Susanti, top-flight men's doubles of
\nRicky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky completed Ardy Wiranata's victory
\nover compatriot Hariyanto Arbi.<\/p>\n
World number one Joko Suprianto, All-England reigning champion
\nHariyanto and world number two pair of Ricky and Rexy are the
\nonly Indonesia's big names to watch at Beijing's inaugural meet
