After a lengthy debate, major parties in the North Sumatra
\nprovincial council on Monday finally endorsed the appointment of
\nRudolf Pardede as acting Governor of the province.<\/p>\n
The decision by six parties in the provincial council was
\ndeclared final and binding despite strong objections from the
\nProsperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Star Reform Party (PBR).
\nFrustrated with Rudolf's appointment, members of the two parties
\nwalked out during the plenary session that debated the
\nappointment of the acting governor.<\/p>\n
Emerging from the meeting, a top councillor with PBR Raden
\nSyafi'i said that he was disappointed with the decision, which
\nwas in line with a decree issued by the Minister of Home Affairs
\nthat appointed Rudolf as acting governor.<\/p>\n
Rudolf should have not been appointed because the decree was
\nadministratively flawed, said Raden, the chairman of PBR faction
\nin the North Sumatra provincial council. He said the decree was
\nflawed as it was issued without with consent of the provincial
\ncouncil.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a leading politician from PKS, Muhammad Nuh, said
\nthe appointment was legally questionable as Rudolf was still
\nmired in a case concerning his school diploma. Rudolf is being
\nprobed by police because during the gubernatorial election of
\n2003 he submitted a letter stating that he had completed senior
\nhigh school in Sukabumi, West Java and did not have a high school
\ndiploma. As he only filed a letter instead of a school diploma,
\nhis candidacy has been questioned by the certain people and
\npolice were trying to determine if Rudolf was in fact once a
\nstudent at the school.<\/p>\n
According to Nuh, if Rudolf made a false statement in the
\nletter, then he should be prosecuted and his appointment
\nannulled.<\/p>\n
Nuh suspected that the statements in the letter were untrue as
\nRudolf never provided evidence to support his assertions.<\/p>\n
Separately, Hasbullah Hadi, a leading councillor from the
\nDemocrat Party supporting Rudolf said the decision by the
\nMinister of Home Affairs was correct as he was vested with rights
\nto appoint an acting Governor.<\/p>",
