A massive pile of rubbish accumulated in front of the East Cakung SPPG in East Jakarta is being cleared using at least six trucks, far more than the usual single vehicle, due to heightened waste production during the Eid al-Fitr period and quota restrictions on transport to the Bantargebang landfill. Waste collectors, who rely on the site for their livelihoods, express concerns over potential relocation plans for the temporary disposal point, highlighting tensions between local needs and government infrastructure decisions. The issue is exacerbated by external residents dumping waste illegally to avoid fees, underscoring broader challenges in urban waste management and public service equity.

JAKARTA - A mountain of rubbish in front of the East Cakung SPPG on
Cakung-Cilincing Raya Street in East Jakarta began to be cleared today,
Sunday (5/4/2026).

On the right side, two orange waste transport trucks were parked. On
the left side, a power press truck was parked.

Right next to the gradually diminishing rubbish pile, a wheel loader
heavy vehicle was transferring the waste from the heap into the truck
containers.

Around the area, waste collection workers were arriving one after
another with their carts.

According to a local waste collector, at least six rubbish trucks
have been transporting the waste to the Bantargebang TPST since
midday.

“There have been six since earlier; this is because there’s a lot (of
rubbish). Usually, it’s just one for pressing,” said a waste worker,
Amri, when met at the location on Sunday.

He explained that the rubbish at this TPS for RW 003 residents is not
usually this much. According to him, the accumulation occurred due to
several factors.

First, the Eid al-Fitr moment caused residents to produce more waste.
Second, restrictions on waste transport quotas to the Bantargebang
TPST.

“During Eid, it’s usually a lot. Eid lasts one day, but the pile-up
can last almost a month,” he said.

The waste collectors hope that this TPS is not relocated to build a
new SPPG. This is because they have relied on their livelihoods by
collecting waste from house to house for decades.

“Because the TPS was there first. If it’s to be moved, where to? Even
now like this, which one does the government want to save? Because both
are government-owned,” said another waste collector, Firman.

According to him, besides RW 003 residents, many outsiders still
frequently dump rubbish here.

He suspects that other residents avoid paying cleanliness fees and
think this TPS is free.

He pointed to a black sedan that stopped on the roadside to drop off
a black plastic bag of rubbish.

“Look at that, nice car, rich person but dumping rubbish here,” said
Firman.

That, according to him, also contributes to the large amount of
rubbish there.
",
