Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Asia-Pacific Bureau Advocacy Manager\nAleksandra Bielakowska has said journalism plays a vital role in\nmaintaining democratic accountability amid the torrent of digital\ninformation and challenges to public trust in the media.<\/p>\n
Reporters Without Borders is an international non-governmental,\nnon-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and promoting press\nfreedom and freedom of information worldwide.<\/p>\n
Aleksandra said journalism ensures that information conveyed to the\npublic has undergone a process of verification and fact-checking.<\/p>\n
\u201cJournalists work not only based on specific journalistic ethics, but\nalso strict standards of information verification and re-checking of\nfacts. They do not simply spread whatever is circulating online just\nlike that,\u201d Aleksandra said during a media delegation visit under the\nframework of Taiwan\u2019s New Southbound Policy in Taipei on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
According to her, the discipline of verification distinguishes\njournalistic work from digital information that has not undergone\nadequate examination, including disinformation.<\/p>\n
She assessed that this process greatly helps the public determine\nwhich information can be trusted amid the torrent of information.<\/p>\n
Aleksandra also highlighted the emergence of narratives questioning\nthe credibility of the media amid various challenges in the information\necosystem.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn fact, the reality is that the media is the antidote,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
According to her, journalism continues to have an important function\nin democracy by providing the information the public needs while also\ncarrying out a watchdog function.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs long as democracy still exists, we need you (journalists) to help\nmaintain it. This is the only way to preserve the system we have built\nover many years and ensure accountability,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Aleksandra assessed that support for journalists and press freedom is\nnecessary so that they can carry out their duties professionally,\nespecially when the space for press freedom faces restrictions.<\/p>\n
She acknowledged that there is no definitive answer to overcoming the\nchallenge of public trust in the media. However, consistency in carrying\nout journalistic duties and maintaining professional standards is an\nimportant part of maintaining that trust.<\/p>\n
Aleksandra\u2019s views are in line with the emphasis on the importance of\nverification in professional journalism in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar\nPatria previously said that verification is the key to professional\njournalism in the digital era.<\/p>\n
According to him, the discipline of verification is the main\ncharacteristic that distinguishes journalism from social media content\namid the prevalence of disinformation.<\/p>\n
