MANILA (Reuter): The Philippines told women civil servants on
\nWednesday not to wear seductive clothes to work if they wanted to
\navoid unwelcome sexual advances.<\/p>\n
The head of the civil service and one of the country's most
\nsenior women officials, Alma de Leon, reminded women workers of a
\n1991 official memorandum banning \"tight-fitting, seductive,
\nmicro-mini and gauzy or transparent dresses\" in government
\noffices.<\/p>\n
Walking shorts, pedal pushers, leggings, tights, jogging pants
\nand jeans, as well as \"flashy bangles (and) heavy make-up\" are
\nalso prohibited. But pantaloons usually worn at formal functions
\nare allowed, the memo says.<\/p>\n
Violators are liable to reprimand or even suspension for
\ninsubordination.<\/p>\n
De Leon issued the reminder to avoid cases of women
\ncomplaining of being sexually harassed by male colleagues,
\npersonnel officer Antonio Bangalisan told Reuters.<\/p>\n
Bangalisan cited the case of a provincial woman employee who
\nfiled a case of sexual harassment against a politician but was
\nlater told by her superiors she could have avoided the incident
\nif she had not worn eye-popping clothes.<\/p>\n
\"Plunging necklines could be a temptation for sexual
\nharassment,\" he said.<\/p>",
