RP wants exiled rebels to face charges<\/p>\n
PHILIPPINES: The Philippine government is studying how to seek
\nthe return from the Netherlands of an exiled communist leader on
\nmurder charges in the absence of an extradition treaty, an
\nofficial said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison
\nand seven communist guerrilla leaders were charged on Tuesday in
\nconnection with the assassination of a lawmaker two years ago.
\nSison denied the charges.<\/p>\n
But Dutch Justice Ministry spokesman Victor Holtus said on
\nWednesday the government had not received an extradition request
\nnor had any contact with the Philippines.<\/p>\n
The charges against Sison, who has lived in the Dutch city of
\nUtrecht since 1987, are seen as part of President Gloria
\nMacapagal Arroyo's talk-and-fight approach to the 34-year-old
\nMarxist rebellion, considered the main security threat and a key
\nimpediment to economic development in the impoverished Southeast
