RP to renegotiate air pacts<\/p>\n
MANILA (DPA): The Philippines plans to renegotiate air
\nagreements with four Asian countries to ensure that Philippine
\nAirlines (PAL) will not face unfair competition amid efforts to
\nrevive the flag carrier's operations, officials said Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Foreign Assistant Secretary for Legal Affairs Franklin
\nEbdalin, also a member of the Civil Aeronuatics Board, said the
\nnew talks with Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore are
\nscheduled to start within the month.<\/p>\n
Ebdalin noted that current air agreements with the four
\ncountries are too liberal, which according to the Securities and
\nExchange Commission has resulted in the loss of 1 billion pesos
\n(US$27 million) in revenues a year for PAL.<\/p>\n
The agreements, which were negotiated under the Philippines'
\nopen skies policy, allow the airlines of the four countries to
\nservice passengers from Manila and bring them to a third country
\ndestination and vice versa.<\/p>",
