RP to normalize ties with S'pore<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): President Fidel Ramos yesterday said the
\nPhilippines was taking steps to normalize relations with
\nSingapore after the apparent settlement of the dispute over
\nexecuted Filipina maid Flor Contemplacion.<\/p>\n
Ramos told a press conference that the Philippines \"has
\nstarted to take steps to normalize its relations with Singapore.\"<\/p>\n
He said the moves came after the results of a third-party
\nautopsy in the United States which supported Singapore's
\ncontention that Contemplacion had murdered her fellow Filipina
\nmaid Delia Maga in Singapore in 1991.<\/p>\n
Ties between the two countries were downgraded after
\nContemplacion was hanged in Singapore in March for the murder of
\nMaga and a Singaporean toddler.<\/p>\n
Many Filipinos insisted that Contemplacion was innocent,
\nstaging massive protests on her behalf. Their calls were
\nbolstered by the conclusion of Philippine pathologists that Maga
\nhad been beaten, probably by a man, and not strangled by
\nContemplacion as the Singaporeans had said.<\/p>",
