RP to get nuclear detection equipment<\/p>\n
PHILIPPINES: The United States said on Tuesday it would
\ninstall special equipment at Manila Port to detect shipments of
\nnuclear and other radioactive material as part of Washington's
\nefforts to prevent nuclear terrorism.<\/p>\n
The U.S. and the Philippines signed a pact to install the
\nequipment at the busy international port, which would boost the
\nallies' \"work on the war on terrorism,\" the U.S. Embassy said in
\na statement.<\/p>\n
The gear was developed by the U.S. Department of Energy as
\npart of Washington's overall nuclear security efforts \"to guard
\nagainst the proliferation of nuclear weapons material\", it said.<\/p>\n
\"The United States and the Philippines both recognize the need
\nto remain vigilant against the threat posed by the trafficking of
\nnuclear and other radioactive materials through the global
\nmaritime shipping network,\" U.S. Embassy charge d'affaires Joseph
\nMussomeli said.<\/p>\n
Washington is concerned about the possibility of al-Qaeda or
