RP to end search for Abu Sayyaf chief<\/p>\n
PHILIPPINES: The Philippine military will soon end its three-
\nmonth-long hunt for the country's most wanted Moro militant in
\npart of the southern island of Mindanao, a senior defense
\nofficial said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The failure to capture Khaddafy Janjalani, the leader of the
\nal-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf Group, appears to be a setback for the
\nUnited States, which has poured millions of dollars into training
\nand equipping Philippine troops to fight militants.<\/p>\n
The defense official, who asked not to be identified, told
\nReuters that Philippine troops would give up their search in
\nMaguindanao province by the end of September following complaints
\nfrom local Muslim communities.<\/p>\n
"We're not giving up our efforts to hunt down Janjalani," the
\ndefense official told Reuters.<\/p>\n
"But there is a more urgent need to avoid the undue and
\nprolonged displacement of local communities in affected areas."
